Breast Augmentation [ Enlargement ] Breast Augmentation, or technically known as augmentation mammoplasty, is a surgical procedure to enhance the size of a woman’s breast for a number of reasons: -To enhance the body contour of a woman who, for personal reasons, feels her breast size is too small -To correct a reduction in breast volume after pregnancy -To balance a difference in breast size -As a reconstructive technique following breast surgery By inserting an implant, either sub-muscular or sub glandular, behind each breast, surgeons are able to increase a woman’s bustline by one or more bra cup sizes. Implants are filled with a saline solution or a silicone gel for reconstructive purposes. The surgery is considered out-patient and may be performed in office facility, a free-standing surgical center or a hospital out-patient facility. General anesthesia is administered for the surgery which usually takes approximately 1- 2 hours to complete. The incision site will vary from patient to patient depending upon preference and what the patient is a good candidate for. There are four different incision sites to choose from : through the areola, under the mammary fold, through the armpit, or a “scarless” technique which is through the belly button. Scarring is minimal, approximately 1-2 inches. Recovery is generally 3-7 days. You are likely to feel sore for a few days, but able to get around within 24-48 hours. Pain medication is prescribed. Stiches are removed within 7-10 days and follow ups are mandatory. Risks and complications should be discussed with your surgeon. Breast implants do not interfere with pregnancy, breast feeding or future mammograms. Breast Lift A breast lift, or mastopexy, is a surgical procedure to raise and reshape sagging breasts. Factors, such as pregnancy, nursing, and the sheer force of gravity can contribute the loss of elasticity in the skin surrounding the breast tissue. Mastopexy can also reduce the size of the areola. There are a few different ways to do a breast lift depending on the level of ptosis, or sagging, of the breast. You and your surgeon would be able to determine which type of a mastopexy you would be a good candidate for. Upon determining what incisions are necessary, the surgery will last anywhere between 1- 3 hours. General anesthesia is administered for this surgery. Recovery is minimal with minor swelling and bruising. You may feel uncomfortable for a few days but the pain is not severe and pain medication is prescribed for any discomfort. Healing is gradual and although you may feel fine it is important to follow post-op care instructions, such as no lifting for three to four weeks. Risks and complications should be discussed with your surgeon. Liposelection The VASER Technology used for the LipoSelection procedure is efficient and precise because the sound waves it emits break up fatty tissue while leaving surrounding tissues largely undisturbed. Treatment with the VASER System has been reported to produce low to minimal pain, low to minimal bruising and swelling, and few complications. Tissue selectivity is key: Fatty tissue consists primarily of adipose (fat) cells, but it also contains other important tissues, including nerves, blood vessels, and connective tissue. The VASER System utilizes proprietary ultrasound technology to break up fatty tissue before removal. Sound energy, similar to that used to remove a cataract from the eye, fragments fatty tissue. Fat cells, which are large and soft, break apart (think of how easily a full water balloon will burst) while leaving nerves, blood vessels and connective tissue largely undisturbed. Because the sound energy leaves other surrounding tissue relatively intact, patients and physicians report low to minimal pain and low to minimal swelling and bruising. Once emulsified, fat is removed with minimal disturbance to important structural tissue, yielding smooth results. Liposuction Liposuction, also known as “lipoplasty” or “suction lipectomy” is a procedure that can help sculpt the body by removing unwanted fat from specific areas. These areas include the abdomen, hips, thighs, buttocks, upper arms, chin and more. There are different techniques and which one you would be a good candidate for would be determined by your surgeon. The best candidate for liposuction is a normal-weight person with firm, elastic skin who have pockets of excess fat in certain areas. You should be physically healthy and be realistic in you expectations. Age is not a major consideration. There are many variables with liposuction : the technique, the length of time for the surgery, the areas being done, the type of anesthesia to be administered and the desired results. Each body is different and needs to be treated specifically to each person’s needs. However, these variables can be quickly narrowed down by discussing what is best for you with your surgeon. Healing is gradual, but recovery is not difficult. You will feel very sore for a few days to a week following surgery. There will be evident bruising and swelling which will disappear within 2 weeks. Although you will have great results in as little as two weeks, your final results can take up to 2 months or more. A compression garment is necessary for at least two weeks following surgery. This will decrease swelling and help to tighten the skin. If your expectations are realistic, you should be very pleased with this surgery. Risks and complications should be discussed with your surgeon. Abdominoplasty [ Tummy Tuck ] Abdominoplasty, or more commonly known as a “tummy tuck” is a major surgical procedure to remove excess skin and fat from the middle and lower abdomen and to tighten the muscles of the abdomen wall. There is an alternative to the full tummy tuck, which is a partial tuck involving the removal of skin only for those who qualify. This procedure can dramatically reduce the appearance of a protruding abdomen that usually is the result of weight gain or pregnancy. The best candidate for abdominoplasty is one that is physically healthy due to the healing required with this surgery. All smokers will be advised to stop smoking prior to this procedure as to not inhibit the healing process. The surgery is particularly helpful to women who, through multiple pregnancies, have stretched their abdominal muscles and skin beyond the point where they can return to normal. A complete abdominoplasty will take 2- 4 hours depending on the extent of work required. General anesthesia is administered. Most commonly, the surgeon will make an incision from hipbone to hipbone, just above the pubic region and a second incision is made to free the navel from surrounding tissue. Then any excess skin or fatty tissue is removed and the abdominal walls are tightened. Recovery is approximately 10 days to 2 weeks and although this is an out-patient procedure, it is very important to follow strict post-op care. The scarring can take up to nine or ten months to flatten out and become lighter. Risks and complications should be discussed with your surgeon. Blepharoplasty [ Eyelid Surgery ] Blepharoplasty is a surgical procedure to remove fat and excess skin from the upper and lower eyelids. This procedure can correct droopy upper lids and puffy bags below the eyes – features that usually make you look older and more tired than you feel. Eyelid surgery is out-patient and can be done with either a local or general anesthesia. The procedure can take anywhere between one to three hours depending upon the amount of work that is necessary. In a typical procedure the surgeon makes incisions following the natural lines of your eyelids; the crease in the upper lids and just below the lash line of the lower lids. The excess skin, fatty tissue and muscle may be removed. You can expect bruising and swelling for approximately 7-10 days. Recovery is not painful usually. You may just experience sensitivity or itching. Risks and complications should be discussed with your surgeon. Rhinoplasty [ Nose Surgery ] Rhinoplasty, or surgery of the nose, is a procedure that can reduce or increase the size of the nose, change the shape of the tip or bridge, narrow the span of the nostrils, or change the angle between your nose and upper lip. This procedure is out-patient and can be done with a local or general anesthesia and usually takes an hour or two depending upon the amount of work that is necessary. Due to the variety of options as to what you can correct, there are many variables when deciding on what technique to choose for your surgery. These variables can be narrowed down quickly by discussing your desired result with your surgeon. Your recovery is relatively easy with very minimal, if any, pain. You may experience a dull headache and you will have some bruising and swelling. Within 7-10 days all dressings, splints and stiches would be removed. Internal healing is very gradual and it is important to follow strict post –op care, such as not wearing glasses for six to seven weeks. Final results can take up to six months. Risks and complications should be discussed with your surgeon. Gynecomastia [ Male Breast Reduction ] Although rarely discussed, enlarged male breasts is a common condition. Gynecomastia affects approximately 40 to 60 percent of men. There is no known cause, although there has been some correlation with various drugs or medical conditions. Men who feel self-conscious about their appearance are helped with breast-reduction surgery. The procedure removes fat and/or glandular tissue from the breasts, and in extreme cases removes excess skin, resulting in a contoured chest that is flatter and firmer. Otoplasty [ Ear Surgery ] Ear surgery is typically performed to set prominent ears back closer to the head, or to reduce the size of large ears. Surgery may be helpful for “lop ear," "cupped ear" and "shell ear,” large or stretched earlobes, and lobes with large creases and wrinkles. Surgeons are also able to construct new ears for patients who are missing them due to injury or other causes. The operation can be performed on children as young as four years of age when the ears are fully grown, in order to minimize teasing in school. The procedure lasts from two to three hours and may be performed in a hospital, office-based facility or an outpatient surgery center under general or local anesthesia. Vaginal Rejuvination Vaginal surgery, or vaginoplasty, serves many functions: it can improve the appearance of the vagina, relieve discomfort, aid in proper hygiene, increase sexual satisfaction, and boost self-confidence. The procedure may be performed to correct internal or external problems. Internal vaginoplasty tightens muscles in the vagina that have loosened from aging or childbirth, while external vaginoplasty trims the vaginal lips (labia minora) to remove excess skin and achieve a balance in size. Vaginal rejuvenation surgery restores the vagina to its youthful appearance and performance by tightening and strengthening the vagina and pelvic floor, as well as making any desired cosmetic adjustments. Other problems such as hernia protrusion, clitoral hood removal or hymen repair can be corrected at this time. Incisions are placed as inconspicuously as possible and dissolving stitches are used to minimize post-operative scars. Facelift [ Rhytidectomy ] In time, gravity, sun exposure, and the stresses of daily life take their toll on our faces: deep creases appear beside the mouth, the jawline slackens, and folds and fat deposits appear on the neck. Facelifts counteract these problems by removing fat and tightening skin and muscles, giving your face a fresher, youthful look. After surgery, some patients appear 10-15 years younger. Browlift A forehead lift or a “browlift” is a procedure that restores a more youthful, refreshed look to the area above the eyes. In this procedure, the muscles and tissues that cause the furrowing or drooping are removed or altered to smooth the forehead, raise the eyebrows and minimize frown lines. There is the traditional technique in which the incision is hidden just behind the hairline or it may be done with an endoscope using only two minimal incisions. The browlift is usually done in conjunction with either a face lift or an upper eyelid surgery as to smooth out the entire area. Forehead lift is most commonly performed in the 40 – 60 age range to minimize the visible effects of aging. General anesthesia is administered for the procedure although you may be able to opt for a local anesthesia with a sedative depending upon the technique used. This is an outpatient procedure and can be performed in an office-based facility. Recovery is typically one week. You will be up and around in a day or so, but need to take it easy for 7-10 days. You can expect minor bruising and swelling which will fade within three weeks. Loss of sensation along the incision lines is common and will be temporary. Risks and complications should be discussed with your surgeon. Laser Hair Removal While shaving, waxing tweezing and electrolysis all work to remove unwanted hair, they can sometimes be painful and time consuming methods. Those looking to get rid of unwanted hair faster should consider turning to laser hair removal. Laser hair removal is a procedure that utilizes laser light to effectively remove unwanted hair. The laser produces a beam of highly concentrated light. The light passes through the outer layers of skin in order to directly target hair follicles. At the follicle level, the laser light penetrates the hair follicles, and uses its energy to heat the follicle, effectively destroying the hair follicle which inhibits hair re-growth. As a result, hair growth is impaired without affecting the surrounding tissue. Laser hair removal cannot remove all hair in one treatment; therefore patients will need multiple treatments in order to effectively reduce unwanted hair. Most patients will need anywhere from 3-6 treatments, but some might need up to 8. Laser hair removal is currently the number one laser treatment performed in the United States; therefore patients can trust that the laser hair removal procedure is a safe, fast and effective way to permanently reduce any and all unwanted hair. Laser Skin Resurfacing In laser skin resurfacing a laser is used to remove areas of damaged or wrinkled skin, layer by layer. The procedure is most commonly used to minimize the appearance of fine lines, especially around the mouth and the eyes. However, it is also effective in treating facial scars or areas of uneven pigmentation. Laser resurfacing may be performed on the whole face or in specific regions. Often, the procedure is done in conjunction with another cosmetic operation, such as a facelift or eyelid surgery. Laser Removal of Scars & Stretch Marks Unsightly scars and stretch marks, or striae, have presented problems for men and women for centuries. Scars and stretch marks are generally considered unsightly, disfiguring, and form as part of the skin's healing process whenever multiple layers of skin are injured. The injury may be the result of an accident, surgery, a burn or even severe acne. The exact cause of stretch marks is unknown. It is thought, however, that striae are the result of the skin's collagen and elastic fibers breaking down under stress. Pregnancy, bodybuilding and weight loss are the leading causes of stretch marks. Stretch marks occur most frequently in areas of mechanical stress such as the breasts, abdomen, thighs, groin or buttocks. In the beginning, stretch marks appear reddened. They turn white as part of the healing process. It is the period of time when stretch marks are the reddest that they are the most amenable to treatment with a laser. It is very common to be able to reduce the appearance of a stretch mark to make it such that it is barely visible from conversational distance. Many of the lasers are utilized to stimulate the capillary blood flow of the stretch mark or cells called fibroblasts, which create the body's own collagen. This causes new collagen to be produced under the stretch mark or scar until it more closely resembles surrounding normal skin. This treatment is performed without an anesthetic. Some patients feel a slight tingling with the laser pulses or as if they were being snapped with a rubber band. Hyperpigmentation Skin color is influenced by a person’s genetic heritage as well as environmental factors. It is determined by the amount of pigment or melanin that is produced in the skin. The cells manufacturing this pigment are called melanocytes. These cells are found throughout the upper layers of the skin. Natural pigment is nature’s way of protecting the skin from ultraviolet light. A suntan is actually sun damage and does not provide sun protection. Uneven pigmentation of the skin may be a natural occurrence or related to ultraviolet light, infection, hormones, drugs, acne or topical chemicals applied to the skin. There are also skin diseases and genetic abnormalities that can cause hyperpigmentation. Common causes of hyperpigmentation include sunspots, freckles, “acne spots” and melasma (pregnancy mask). Freckles Freckles are harmless, small patches of melanin that accumulate in the skin. They are usually flat, small and tan or light brown in color. Freckles usually appear on the face, arms, shoulders and back. Sun exposure makes freckles more prominent. People with light skin and red or blonde hair are usually the most susceptible to freckles, but anyone with any skin tone or any ethnic background can develop freckles. Freckles usually begin appearing in children at age 2. Most people in their late 40s to early 60s notice that freckles they once had in their youth have begun to fade or disappear. But not many people want to wait until they are older to rid themselves of freckles. Now you don't have to wait, you can deplete your freckles in as little as 3 to 6 months. Tattoo Removal Tattoos are created by injecting colored pigment into small deep holes made in the skin. Regardless of who injects the pigment, the designs are relatively permanent. For various reasons, people want tattoos removed. Pulses of light from the laser are directed onto the tattoo pigment. Over the next several weeks the body’s macrophages remove the tattoo pigmented areas. More than one treatment is usually necessary to removal all of the pigment. IPL Photo Facial Photo Facials or Intense Pulsed Light Photorejevenation, represents an exciting procedure to produce younger healthier looking skin. As most of us age, we begin to see small but visible signs of sun damage . This may include freckles, broken capillaries, dark spots, a blotheness and redness of the face and neck. Photo Facials can be used to treat vascular pigmented brown spots, sun damage and collagen structure all at once. With the use of this exciting new technology, dramatic results can be achieved with little or no “downtime”. Immediately after the treatment the area will feel somewhat warm. Occasionally there can be some mild swelling and bruising. Most patients can typically return to work after the treatment. Generally a series of Photo Facials leads to optimal results. Most patients need four to eight sessions. Photo Facial in treating Rosacea – Sun exposure, alcohol, medications, stress and aging are common causes of Rosacea. Rosacea is a common skin condition characterized by redness and flushing skin. PhotoFacial treatments control flushing and in many cases, reduces the need for topical creams and antibiotics. Vein Removal Botox Injections The cosmetic form of botulinum toxin, often referred to by its product name Botox®, is a popular non-surgical injection that temporarily reduces or eliminates frown lines, forehead creases, crows feet near the eyes and thick bands in the neck. The toxin blocks the nerve impulses, temporarily paralyzing the muscles that cause wrinkles while giving the skin a smoother, more refreshed appearance. Studies have also suggested that Botox is effective in relieving migraine headaches, excessive sweating and muscle spasms in the neck and eyes. If you're considering injectables... As we age, our faces begin to show the effects of gravity, sun exposure and years of facial muscle movement, such as smiling, chewing and squinting. The underlying tissues that keep our skin looking youthful and plumped up begin to break down, often leaving laugh lines, smile lines, crow's feet or facial creases over the areas where this muscle movement occurs. Soft-tissue fillers, most commonly injectable collagen or fat, can help fill in these lines and creases, temporarily restoring a smoother, more youthful-looking appearance. When injected beneath the skin, these fillers plump up creased and sunken areas of the face. They can also add fullness to the lips and cheeks. Injectable fillers may be used alone or in conjunction with a resurfacing procedure, such as a laser treatment, or a recontouring procedure, such as a facelift. Restylane A Restylane treatment is the actual administering of the Restylane product. A treatment consists of a clear gel being injected into the skin with a very thin needle. It is injected into an area, and restores the natural volumes underneath the wrinkle. The wrinkle is now lifted up and smoothed out. All of this takes about 30 minutes, leaves no marks or scars, and the results can be seen immediately. Your skin is made of two layers, with supporting columns holding them apart. The area in-between includes the clear-jelly like substance Hyaluronic Acid. While young, the Hyaluronic acid is in abundance. As you grow older, the acid between these layers diminishes, and the skin somewhat caves, causing a wrinkle along the line. The wrinkle would be gone if you filled that area back up with the Hyaluronic Acid jelly-like substance. That's where Restylane come in. Depending on the results you'd like, you can discuss maintenance with your doctor and the period between injections. Follow up injections typically need less Restylane to achieve the results you want. Time between injections is typically 6 to 12 months. Approximately 48 hours after the treatment your skin will start to peel. This peeling will generally last 2 to 5 days. A great weekend treatment for your skin. Microdermabrasion Microdermabrasion is a skin-freshening technique that helps repair facial skin that takes a beating from the sun and the effects of aging. Body Creations uses a device like a fine sandblaster to spray tiny crystals across the face, mixing gentle abrasion with suction to remove the dead, outer layer of skin. As with other skin rejuvenation techniques, more than one treatment may be needed to reduce or remove fine wrinkles and unwanted pigmentation. Obaji Skin Care Skin Medica
